今日、スコティッシュキルトは世界中でスコットランドの伝統的な衣装として有名です。キルトの柄と形の見た目はおしゃれですが、スコットランドの人々にとっては愛国心と伝統の象徴でもあります。

Today, the Scottish kilt is famous as the traditional dress of Scotland all over the world.  Its pattern and form look fashionable, but also it is an important symbol of tradition and patriotism for Scottish people.

(16世紀 16th century)
スコティッシュキルトは16世紀にハイランド（ Highlands、スコットランド北部の地域）で生まれました。ウール地の長い布で、ゲール語では “feileadh mor” （英語の意味は『長いキルト ‘long kilt’ 』）として知られています。この “feileadh mor” は毛布として使われる事もあり、夜間に便利でした。

  The Scottish kilt originated in the 16th century in the Highlands which is in the north of Scotland.  It was an untailored woolen long piece of cloth that was known as “feileadh mor” in Gealic and means ‘long kilt’ in English.  This “feileadh mor” could be used as a blanket and it was useful at night.

(17世紀 17th century )
17世紀には『小さいキルト “small kilt” 』（ゲール語では “feileadh-beag”又は”phillabeg” ）が発達しました。これは16世紀のキルト程大きくなく、布地にタータン柄の肩掛けが付いていました。

Then, the “small kilt” that was called “feileadh-beag” or “phillabeg” in Gaelic, developed in the 17th century.  It was not big as the kilt in the 16th century and the untailored cloth included a belted plaid.

(Dress Act)
1746年、 King George ⅱによって Dress Actという法律が課せられました。これはスコットランドの人々にとって心が痛むものでした。
この法律は、キルトを含めたあらゆる形のハイランドの衣装を着る事を禁止しました。当時、ハイランドの人々はイングランドにとって反抗的であり、キルトは彼らの象徴だったからです。
しかしこの法律は逆効果で、この法律によりキルトはスコットランドの文化と国の誇りの象徴となりました。
約40年後、この法律は廃止されました。

A painful law for Scottish people, the Dress Act was imposed by King George ⅱ in 1746.  It banned the wearing of any form of Highland dress including the kilt.  At that time, the Highlanders were rebellious towards the English and the kilt was their symbol.  However, this law backfired and made the kilt a symbol of Scottish culture and national pride.  Around 40 years later, this law was lifted.

( 18世紀 18th century )
18世紀には、スコティッシュキルトのデザインはより実用的になり、プリーツの付いたスカートの様な衣服になりました。
In the 18th century, the design of the Scottish kilt became more practical and became a pleated, skirt-like garment.

 

 

今日キルトは礼服であり、結婚式、スポーツのイベント、祝日のお祝い、ハイランドゲームズ（ Highland games ）などの特別な催しや公の催しの際にスコットランドの人々はキルトを着ています。

Today, the kilt is a ceremonial dress and the Scottish people wear it for special events and formal events like weddings, sports events, holiday celebrations and Highland games.

(タータン Tartan)
また、キルトの柄であるタータンも重要です。これはスコットランドの氏族（ 共通の祖先を持つ血縁集団 ）、姓、家族や軍の部隊と関連づけられています。つまり、タータンもまたスコットランドの伝統の象徴です。

Also, the tartan that is a pattern on the kilt, is important.  It is associated with Scottish clans, surnames, families or military units.  So, the tartan is a symbol of Scotland’s tradition, too.
